Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings

Classic Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings

Servings: 6 Preparation Time: 20 minutes Baking Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

For the Dumplings:

  • 6 medium-sized tart apples (such as Granny Smith)
  • 1 sheet (about 9×9 inches) store-bought puff pastry, thawed
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 6 equal pieces
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

For the Syrup:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish.
  2. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and remove the seeds from the apples, leaving the bottoms intact. This will create a well for the filling.
  3. Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Fill the well in each apple with this mixture, pressing it in slightly with your fingers. Place a piece of butter on top of the sugar mixture in each apple.
  4. Wrap the Apples: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet slightly to smooth any creases. Cut the sheet into 6 equal squares. Place an apple in the center of each square. Gather the corners of the pastry around the apple and pinch the edges together, sealing the apple inside the pastry.
  5. Arrange in the Baking Dish: Place the wrapped apples in the prepared baking dish, leaving some space between each one.
  6. Prepare the Syrup: In a saucepan, combine the water, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once the sugar has dissolved and the syrup has slightly thickened, remove it from the heat.
  7. Pour the Syrup: Carefully pour the syrup over the dumplings in the baking dish. The syrup will add sweetness and moisture to the dumplings as they bake.
  8. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
  9. Serve: Once baked, remove the dumplings from the oven and allow them to cool slightly. Serve them warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for a delightful treat.

Chef’s Tips:

  • Choose apples that are firm and slightly tart for the best results.
  • If you prefer, you can sprinkle chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, over the sugar mixture inside the apples before wrapping them in the pastry.
  • Leftover dumplings can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheated in the oven before serving.
